Pappenheim Cavalry Standard 1633

Here is the Pappenheim Standard in 1633, from the Stockholm Armémuseum, and below, the Arms of Pappenheim. Size : 83 x 62 cm. The legend of the Armémuseum tell us that it is a cavalry flag from someone of the Pappenheim family and it was taken in the Pappenheim castle, perhaps on june, 13th of 1633.

I have change the obverse of the flag and the words are a bit more readable. Perhaps something like that :
PAR?ARME VERTUS ETAIS
JE FIERAY MES JOURS
And, thanks for Motorway, the german text would be something like that :
MIT FREUDEN STATT
MIT SH?? DARVON

  1. Very interesting indeed, as black colours were very rare. Any idea about the text on the banner?

  3. 'Mit Freuden statt mit S... darvon' (Unfortunatly I can't read the fifth word.)

'With pleasure in stead of ...on the go'

  5. Could be Latin or even French as I read the words 'arme', 'je' and 'mes'. Perhaps a good idea to ask for a pic of a better resolution?

  6. You are right, it seems to be in french but difficult to read:
    ?A?? ARME VERTUS ETAIS
    JE FIEIRAY MES JOURS
(from "fier ses jours" : i would tust my life to)
I would be something like: trust your life in the arms of the Pappenheim family...

  7. The motto reads : "Mit Freude dran, mit Glück darvon", which loosely translates as "Get merrily stuck in and come out alive with luck". It was Papenheim's own motto and appeared on most of his standards.

Il s'agit de la devise de Papenheim, qui apparaissait presque toujours sur son héraldique.
